We believe hockey is the greatest game on earth and that all kids and their families should have the opportunity to experience the game and a day at the rink as it was meant to be... FUN! We also believe that the Bible is the single source of truth for revealing the purpose for our lives and provides the guiding principles to build strength in character and strength in our communities.
BCHL was originally founded in 1997 as the Barrie Christian Pond Hockey League by Len and Beth Robinson who had a vision to put fun, family, friends, fellowship, community, servant leadership and affordability into the fabric of a grass roots, Christ-centred hockey league that welcomed kids of all ability to come and enjoy the opportunity to play the game. Since these humble beginnings, we have been blessed to grow and thrive as a league, offering a popular and distinctive option for families who want to build character and memories, not stress, through the hockey experience.
BCHL Power Plays are a very important part of our league. They are short devotionals based on scripture from the Bible, followed by prayer, conducted by the coaches of every team 15 minutes before the start of each game. As a league we believe that not only do you need to "pump up" your physical body to prepare to play hockey, but you also need to "pump up" your spirit as well.
In addition to our mission of spreading the good news of Jesus Christ in our local community through hockey ministry, we also believe it is our responsibility as a league to support other ministries that extend this good news around the globe.
Scott and Tracy come from Ontario and lived in Barrie attending Emmanuel Baptist Church while for many years running a masonry business. In lay ministry at Emmanuel they were involved in the Alpha ministries, coming to faith through and helping with the Alpha program. Scott and Tracy were led to Peru in 2014 and have lived in Puerto Maldonado since October 2014. They have opened a new children’s home called Alegre Sonido de Dios . Since arriving in Peru, they have cared for over 25 children who have come from varying backgrounds including sexual abuse, violent abuse, abandonment and being orphans.
Alegre Sonido de Dios is a home for children of all ages who have suffered at the hands of their abusers. Scott and Tracy Blackburn are dedicated to serving children who have experienced pain from their past experiences. The children, who have varying emotional and developmental challenges are protected, provided with education, spiritual guidance and counsel. In this safe, loving environment, these children are daily reassured that they are loved by the staff and by God.
From a very young age Tatiana Blackburn had a heart for serving children. After a short trip to help out at an orphanage in Haiti in 2014 she was ready to go all in to serve the less fortunate children of the world. Tatiana was the driving force behind the family moving to Peru, and she loved the children of Peru.
In the summer of 2018 Tatiana Blackburn died tragically in a car accident. To continue her memory we have started a fund called Tat’s Kids Peru. This fund is designated to the children’s home, and will be used to further the cause she believed in so deeply.
Both of Scott and Tracy’s boys, Caleb and Jaxson played in the BCHL and Scott was a coach for 5 years and the Atom division Convenor for 2 years. Whenever the Blackburns are in Ontario, Jaxson joins us on the ice and plays in the BCHL when he can.
